Anarchy Means…Stolen Seedcoin?

Why was the Seedcoin stolen? And will this act be committed again?
Why was the Seedcoin stolen? And will this act be committed again?

We’re sure the word Anarchy brings up a variety of images in the minds of our readers. For some, it’s a grand utopia of collective power. For others, it’s a flaming trash heap rolling down a hill. And in some societies on Avesta, it turns out anarchy is feeling a bit more like the latter.

Reports have surfaced of a mysterious wanderer hopping between Anarchist societies, stuffing their pockets with community funds, and then quickly disappearing. While some have chalked this up to a bold demonstration of the “no rules” lifestyle, others (mainly the ones with empty Seedling wallets) are feeling a little less enthusiastic.

Among the societies affected were Elysium, and Oredale, each of which discovered that their funds had mysteriously dwindled overnight. Cultivator Sophia Kramer was among the first to witness the pattern, reporting, “that guy just went around stealing funds from anarchy societies? He entered Novalith and then left half an hour later.” Fortunately, Novalith took precautionary action against theft and therefore was not affected.

The situation has left many questioning how exactly “self-governance” is supposed to work within an Anarchist framework. Some societies even found ways to spring into action, protecting their communities finances. For example, the community of Brutopia spotted this thievery and transferred 30 thousand Seedcoin to Leader JJ in order to guard their society’s funds.

Many societies on Avesta have chosen to embrace anarchy, believing that surely people will govern themselves with fairness and mutual respect. And they have, for the most part—until a particularly entrepreneurial individual decided to interpret “freedom” as “free money.”

This recent spree of sudden withdrawals has prompted action from Seed Industries, who have graciously refilled each society’s Seedling wallet with 50,000 credits. However, some Cultivators argue that the system itself is partly to blame. Cultivator Niv13 pointed out that starting in anarchy isn’t necessarily a choice for societies saying, “it is not by choice that society starts with Anarchy. Additionally, not everyone knows the right way to transition or what is at risk. It only takes one person to exploit the whole situation, and as such, this is hardly fair to all the other people in the soc trying to do the ‘right thing’ to get the soc started.”

In other words, the idealists might have had grand visions of mutual aid and cooperation, but it only takes one well-timed withdrawal to turn utopia into bankruptcy.

For now, the Great Heist of Avesta seems to be over, with the culprit warned and funds restored. But what lessons can we take away from this? Perhaps that money is an illusion. Or perhaps that true anarchy is best enjoyed in short bursts.
